What is the point of doing data collection? How can I make it as simple as possible?

Data collection is intended to provide CLNZ with usage data that we can use to make distributions of funds to the rightsholders who have agreed to allow us to licence their material to you. Without their support your organisation would have to go through the complex compliance process outlined here.

It is important to remember that we are not the copyright police and it is not our intention to take punitive actions in response to the data supplied to us. If copying in excess of the licence is found, we will simply notify of your organisation of it—it’s then up to your organisation to decide how to remedy the issue.

There are some simple ways to ensure that data collection is quick and efficient:

  1. Make sure the points made above are communicated to staff
  2. Encourage staff to maintain a bibliography of all course materials used; not only does this make data collection easier but it is also a way of modelling best practice to students
  3. Treat copyright and other aspects of IP law as a compliance issue to be addressed during new staff induction and professional development training
  4. Ask CLNZ about best practice: we’re happy to share our observations from other licenceholders
